THE VERMILION SHADES
Unfortunately only four examples of this deep shade have been obtained. They are quite different in the
intensity of this colour, although the less intense bears comparison with the deepest orange seen
LOOSE SINGLE 1887 SARWAR 1889
The deepest example, 1887, has clear red content across most of the printing, but tends to be a little
lighter towards the edges. However, the 1889 example has less red with occasional red spots.
The uneven ink on the loose stamp consist of an orange colour, but with large streaks of the more reddish
colour more visible in the fine detail, leading to a more orange appearance.
So, the differences are due to red content and how it is distributed across fine details. 5
