                                               LOOSE STAMP WITH PALE APPEARANCE

The examples on sheet are used to consider the causes of less than perfect appearance seen on the

dated examples. There are two different causes and two classes of weakness.

                   (1) The amount of dye in the ink has been lowered, but still results in a uniform printing.
                   (2) The dye is not uniformly distributed in the ink and results in microscopic uninked areas
