NEW ZEALAND £5 POSTAL NOTE

From the collection of Jack Harwood FRPSL.
Member since 2002. Lives in the United States of America.
Postal Notes are a type of Money Order form with a fixed face value. They were intended to facilitate
transmission of small amounts of money from one party to another. This item, with an unusually
large face value, was produced in response to the banking crisis in New Zealand in the mid-1890s.
The post office was one of the few government agencies in which the public had confidence. 58,900
£5 Postal Notes were issued, although no issued example is known to survive. The £5 denomination
was withdrawn from circulation 31December1907.
