A similar error to the POST OFFICE vs POST PAID of Mauritius, but this time done by the American
Bank Note Company, the fabled printing house in New York City. This 1889 die proof, mounted on
card, for a 1 cent stamp has the country name engraved as UNION POSTAL DEL SALVADOR (Postal
Union), when the correct name used during the 1880s was SERVICIO POSTAL DEL SALVADOR (Postal
Service). After some hesitation, the stamps were only placed in use for a very short time with a
black bar obliterating the incorrect legend UNION POSTAL DEL.
