RHODESIA - BECHUANALAND & MASHONALAND
INCOMING POSTAL CHARGES
From the collection of Patrick Flanagan FRPSL, RDPSA.
Member since 2002. Lives in South Africa.
For a short period from 14 May 1892 to 3 July 1892 incoming postal charges were levied on mail
transiting through Cape Town and Bechuanaland to Rhodesia. This required postal authorities to have
great interpretative skills in levying the correct charges, as this cover bears testimony to. It is
fascinating in its origin and destination - London, England and Fort Salisbury, founded by the Pioneer
Column, and in the great number of manuscript markings all geared to payment of the postal charges.
Various attempts were made to levy charges w ith ultimately the correct 4d charge being the
combination of the 2d Bechuanaland charge and the 2d Mashonaland incoming postage charge.
Apparently none were collected as the manuscript "Deceased" would indicate. One of only 3 known.
