William F. Cody 'Buffalo Bill' was born in 1845. From a child he was used to shooting and riding so
became a Pony Express rider in 1860, then the most dangerous occupation on the plains. Afterwards
he guided wagon trains overland; he guided the Sth Cavalry to Utah; was chief scout in the building
of the Union Pacific Railroad; and eventually became Chief of Scouts for the U.S. Army. He is most
remembered as a buffalo hunter, killing 69 in a one-day contest. In supplying meat for the building of
the Kansas Pacific Railroad he shot 4862 buffalo in one season. His famous Wild West Show began in
1883 and in 1887 it toured England. This cover was sent from London to Nebraska during that tour.
