British New Guinea was established as a British Protectorate in 1884. The Crown granted
administration to the Colony of Queensland. A postal service was established in 1887, however covers
prior to 1891 are rare, none of which are registered. British New Guinea used Queensland stamps
until 1 July 1901. There are six registered covers recorded from Port Moresby using Queensland
stamps during the Queensland administration period, and the REGISTERED/PORT MORESBY N.G.
hand stamp is the only recorded example on cover. The correct 2d rate to Brisbane plus 3d
registration has been used on this 1896 cover sent via Thursday Island.
