Philatelically the new century got off to an ominous but interesting start. The Mail Packet
S.S. Ibex struck rocks and sank off Guernsey in the Channel Isles on Sth January. Eventually it
was raised and most of the mail recovered, which can be identified by the 'MAIL PER S S
IBEX' cachet that was applied. The above cover spent more than six months underwater
before being recovered and receiving the second type of Ibex cachet. By the time it was
delivered on lst August 1900 the addressee had died.
