The island, situated roughly midway between South Africa and Antarctica, was first visited by the
Dutch in the 17th century. It was called on by the French explorer Marion du Fresne in 1772, and
subsequently named after him. Britain assumed ownership from 1908 until the island was annexed
by South Africa in December 1947. The reverse of the above cover bears the insignia of H.M.S.A.S
GOOD HOPE and is dated 28th January 1948 by the sender, less than a month after the annexation.
