Apollo 8 (AS-503) Fly Me To The Moon
Once established in ltmar orbit, the astronauts had an unprecedented view of the surface below them.
'The Moon is essentially grey, no colour,' said Lovell, 'Looks like plaster of Paris. Sort of greyish
sand ... ' Then, on Christmas Eve, they sent what would prove to be one of the most evocative messages
ever broadcast from space. It was Anders who introduced a reading from the book of Genesis; 'In the be-
ginning, God created the heaven and the Earth .. . ' Each astronaut took a turn, and then Borman concluded
the transmission. 'From the crew of Apollo 8 we close with goodnight, good luck, a Merry Christmas,
and God bless all of you - all of you on the good Earth.'
