Apollo 9 (AS-504) Spider and Gumdrop
On day three, despite a bout of spacecraft sickness, Schweickart donned his spacesuit to spend thirty-
eight minutes on the porch of the LM while Scott filmed him from the open hatch of the CM. It had been
proposed to demonstrate the possibility of an astronaut making his way from the LM to the CM in the
event of an emergency, but this aspect of the EVA was scrubbed because of Schweikart's earlier space
sickness. Even so, it was a successful space walk and the first using a self-contained life-support system
rather than an umbilical connection to the spacecraft. Another tick.
