The Service Suspended mark was applied in Durban. It is also known to
have been struck in black.
Lord Milner , Govemor of Cape Colony, sent a telegram on the 12th October 1899 to the
Colonial Secretary in London: 'Postal arrangements with the Republics is now
interrupted ... '. The following day a notice to this effect was given to the public in Natal
and Cape Colony . On the 31st October 1899 British Post Office Notice No. 47 set out the
position .
Harrisburg was a District of Orange free state immediately to the west of Natal.
