SERVICE SUSPENDED

Anglo - Boer War

United Kingdom to Transvaal

October 1899

. I

Main feature

The use of the Cape Town 'MAIL SERVICE SUSPENDED' as well as the larger 'MAIL
SERVICE SUSPENDED' applied in Durban in Natal.

War was declared by Great Britain on the 11th October 1899 on Transvaal [ZAR] and the Orange
Free State. Mail services to the two Republics by British services were ipso facto suspended from
the date war was declared. Mail from third party countries then had to find a different mail routing
to the two Republics. Mail for the Transvaal was routinely sent from cape colony via Natal which is
why this item bears two marks the Durban mark being applied first. Cape Town RLO cds for 16'h
January 1900 on the back.
This item was posted in Wales one day after the outbreak of the war
