The use of the Italian 'INTERDIT' mark in violet.
The letter was endorsed to go via London and Southampton. Pretoria was not occupied by
British forces until June 1900. The letter was returned through the Returned letter Office
in Durban [Natal]. The place where the 'Interdit' marking was put on is not certain but
likely to be Durban as teh British post office system at home and abroad used violet ink for
explanatory marks. The Italian 'AL MITTENTE' is struck twice in black not violet.
