Letters from soldiers on active service were not allowed free postage if addressed
within Cape Colony. However as the envelope is endors~d 'No stamps obtainable' no
double postage was charged. 1d was the Cape Colony intemalletter rate for letters up
to% oz. Clanwilliam post office was destroyed by fire a few months later in August 190 1.
