CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
Parcel post
Kimberley to the United Kingdom
April 1900
Main feature
The parcel post rate to the United Kingdom paid on this item was 2s 9d.
The rate in the 1898 Postal Guide was 9d for the first pound and 9d for each extra pound with a limit of
eleven pounds. This is the same rate as reflected in the British Post Office Guide in 1903 for parcels from
the UK to CGH. So unless this item was overpaid, which is unlikely because of the addition of the Id
stamps the 6d extra over 3x9d [2s 3d] could be a late fee to catch the English mails- the sender has
indicated the precise date of the parcel post one day after posting. There are crossed blue lines on the
address portion of the label but this item was not registered as parcels could not be registered. No stamp
