CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
Ship letters
Oudtshoorn to New Zealand
September 1899
Main feature
The 2 1/2d Y2 oz ship letter rate.
CGH entered the UPU on the 1st January 1895. New Zealand had indirect membership
from the 1st October 1891 as a member of the British Colonies of Australasia. CGH
joined the Imperial ld Y2 oz letter rate scheme on the 1st September 1899 two days
before this registered letter was posted.
The endorsement is 'Per direct route, via coast ports per SS Aberdeen. The ship letter
rate was the UPU 2 Y2 d Y2 oz rate so the inference is that the Imperial rate did not apply
to ship letters, only to mail carried on contract packets.
The 4d registration fee was paid by the embossed stamp on the back; three 2Y2d rates
paid for the postage.
