The manuscript postmarks 'Clanwm 14 9 01' [on the stamps] and 'CW
14.9.01 [on the envelope] .
The post office at Clanwilliam was destroyed by fire due to arson on the 1 Qth August
1901 and until new post office equipment was provided [including datestamps]
cancellation of stamps on letters and the date of posting was done by hand as in this
case.
