                                              ALPHA-NUMERIC INWARD CODE

The inward postcode is not a public one, the machine applying a separate nineteen stroke
indexation appropriate to the arbitrary internal code devised by each sorting office. The
address is scanned and the number of the residence and the first three letters of the
thoroughfare (more ~f any ambiguity is likely) are extracted and converted into a five figure
alpha-numeric code identifying the postman's walk.

The date of the trials is uncertain but the date on the envelope implies that they took place in
early 1974, probably in Dallas itself, where the machines were tested before being dismantled
and shipped to France.
