ALPHA-NUMERIC INWARD CODE
The five figure numeric postcode introduced in 1972 was only an outward code containing
elements designating the addressee's dipartement and distribution office. The next stage of
the programme was to devise an inward code, similarly composed of five elements, which would
identify the postman's walk.
A language was devised containing characters grouped into five categories according to whether
they were represented by two, three, four (identical to La Source 2), five or six strokes.
