1853 Monthly Service from Sierra Leone to Plymouth
11 May 1853 - Packet letter from Freetown to London
The first mail contract servicing Sierra Leone was operated by The
African Steam Ship Company (ASSC) from October 1852. This
provided a monthly service at a rate of 1s per half ounce, including
the UK inland charge.
The ASSC’s first vessel was Forerunner. This letter was carried on a
voyage that left Freetown on 12 May 1853, arriving at Plymouth on
1 June and London 2 June.
