Handstruck 1d and Taxe ‘T’

16 September 1925 - Sumbuyah to London, England

This cover was pre-paid 1d by the sender instead of the correct rate of 1½d. The letter was handstamped with
a ‘T’ and ‘1d’, ie double the deficiency.
However, the Madrid UPU Convention of 1920 had set a minimum postage due fee of 30 gold centimes
which became effective from 13 June 1921. This was interpreted as 1½d in the United Kingdom. The 1d
charge on this cover was reassessed on arrival in London, and a 1½d Foreign Branch handstamp applied.
Freetown did not have a 1½d handstamp.
