Handstruck 2d and Taxe ‘T’

18 June 1958 - Koidu Town to Bodmin, England

On 1 April 1958 the surface mail rate to the United Kingdom was increased from 3d to 4d. This letter, posted
a few months later, was pre-paid at the old rate. The Sierra Leone post office noticed the shortfall and marked
the envelope with a T and 2d, ie double the deficiency.
The 2d handstamp is seldom encountered; it has been recorded from 1924, but it may well be significantly
older as other values in a similar design date from Victorian times.
On arrival in Liverpool the UK staff erroneously cancelled the postage due markings with the ancient 466
obliterator.
