Handstruck 5d and Taxe ‘T’
28 October 1940 - Internal letter from Freetown to Kamabai
The creases in the envelope suggest that there was originally a thick pile of paper, compatible with this being
a heavy letter in the second weight band. The internal letter rate was 1½d for the first half-ounce, and an
additional 1d for each extra half-ounce or part thereof. The letter was unpaid, hence attracting handstamps
of ‘T’ and ‘5d’ indicating double the deficiency.
One of only two recorded examples of the ‘5d’ handstamp: the other dates from 1894!
