Handstruck 20¢ and Taxe ‘T’

8 May 1939 - Segbwema to Hartford, USA. Backstamped Freetown 9 May 1939.

In 1939 the surface mail rate to the United States was 3d, although 2d was the correct rate to the United
Kingdom. As this cover was franked at only 2d, there was postage due of 2d, ie double the deficiency. This
was indicated by taxe T and 20¢ (gold centimes) handstamps.
The two USA 2c postage due labels have been pre-cancelled, as usual, by a roller obliterator.

Types 725.20 and 707.01. This cover is illustrated in The London Philatelist, Vol. 102 page 291.
