Karema 
                                                                                 Karema
Karema is one of the most elusive post offices in Sierra Leone. It is situated
in the northern hills, away from any other office. Its purpose was to serve a
detachment of West African troops stationed there. Opened on 20 July 1901,
but closed on 21 April 1902. No further openings were gazetted, although it has
been suggested that the office was only open when the troops were in residence.

                                                      Type 065.01

The date of 10 August 1904 on this example suggests that at least one additional period of opening must have
existed, although this too would have been short-lived as Karema is not included in the post office listing for
1903 and 1905.
The style of the handstamp is peculiar to Karema, in that it is the only marking from this country not to
include the words SIERRA LEONE. Apart from this loose stamp, the only other known strike from Karema
is in the post office impression books.
