Makeni Makeni
Makeni (or Makene officially until 1937) is a major town in the Northern Province.
It was on the northern branch of the railway system. The office opened on Kennema
21 December 1914. There were two handstamps, the second showing the new
spelling. Although not scarce, examples are perhaps more difficult to find than
would be expected due to much of the mail being cancelled on the TPO.
Type 099.01 Type 099.02
Feb 1915 - Mar 1955 Jun 1955 - Indep.
Three examples of Type 099.01 showing significant wear over time.
5 July 1915 - Mourning envelope from Lahingh, UK to Kennema. Backstamped at Freetown (24 Jul) and Makene (27 Jul).
Makene is not en route from Freetown to Kennema, so this must have been put on the wrong train.
