This air mail cover was posted in New York on 2nd December 1941, addressed to South Africa at the
$1.10 rate for carriage trans-Pacific to Hong Kong or Singapore and then onward by BOAC to Cairo. It
left San Francisco on the Anzac Clipper on 6th December. One hour out of Honolulu the Captain was
told of the attack on Pearl Harbour and diverted to Hilo. The letter was censored in Hawaii (ICB
censor handstamp on reverse} and returned to the USA. Eventually it crossed the Atlantic and bears a
Leopoldville, Belgian Congo, transit c.d.s. for 13th April 1942.
