I.A.l Forwarding Letter from Russia 1861 Pre-UPU
Addressed to Tabriz, northern Persia and annotated to be forwarded to Rescht
There is substantial reason to believe that the Russian Mission a t Tabriz in Azarbadjan province in the
NW also assisted in handling mail to be forwarded to other places via an agency possibly as early as the
1850s. However, the Russian Mission had not by 1861 yet established a regular postal services
Via Nakhichevan (Nakhjavan) PO, near to Julfa border station
A Russian PO at the border station Julfa was only established in early 1866

Routes: Folded letter sent from Russia via Tiflis, Georgia as per m/s a nd Nakhjavan arr. 23 Feb
1861 and dep. 26 (Julian calendar) postmarks. Addressed to a Greek merchant in Tabriz, capital in
Azarbadjan province situated in NW of Persia. Forwarded to Recht in the Gilan province as per m / s.
