Instructional Marks

Décédé (Dead)

19 May 1923 - Guernsey to Freetown, Sierra Leone

The addressee of this commercial letter had unfortunately died by the time it reached Freetown. On the back
is a datestamp and the manuscript endorsement Addressee Dead / 4.6.23 J.A. Roberts.
The Freetown post office added the seldom-used DÉCÉDÉ (DEAD) handstamp on the front of the envelope,
and returned the letter to the sender. The purple instructional mark was probably applied in the United
Kingdom.
This is the only recorded example of this handstamp.
