Returned Letter Branch Freetown
3 April 1940 - Freetown to Copenhagen, Denmark via England
The air mail service from England to Denmark was interrupted Backstamp: 3 May 1940
during the war following the German invasion of Denmark. Returned / Letter Branch / Freetown
All such mail routed through England was handstamped with
POSTAL SERVICE SUSPENDED / RETURN TO SENDER,
in the UK, probably London.
The two Freetown datestamps indicate that the cover travelled
to England and back, by sea, in a month.
Although some books of the postmarks of Sierra Leone list the
service suspended mark as being applied in Freetown, this is
not the case.
