This cover was sent from Cockermouth, Cumbria to Swansea, South Wales. It was posted in a wall
post box in the village of Pardshaw, 4 miles south of Cockermouth. This post box was surrounded by
long grass and the letter remained in the box for almost 24 hours, plenty of time for the snails to
enjoy themselves. It seems snails are attracted by the gum on the stamp and on the flap of the
envelope. This must have been a regular occurrence for Royal Mail to annotate the P125 label,
which apologises for accidental damage/delay, "By snails"!
