In October 1981 the United Kingdom government relaxed the monopoly of the Post Office on the
delivery of letters, subject to certain criteria. The Scout Association of Sheffield applied successfully
for a licence to run a private post for the sole purpose of delivering Christmas greetings cards. The
service ran every year until 2000. In one part of the Sheffield postal area, the town of Dronfield,
scout leaders applied to run a much more restricted service just covering the S18 post code area. It
operated for five years from 2002 until 2006 and charged a lower rate than the Royal Mail of 16p
compared to 19p in 2002.
