Watton lies at the middle of the county of Norfolk in England. It has been a market town since the
reign of King John in 1202. In 1938 the R.A.F. built a large airbase on the eastern outskirts of the
town at Carbrooke. Watton's link with U.S.A. was formed at Easter 1943 when the U.S.A.F. 25th
Bomb Group took over the station. Sadly R.A.F. Watton closed in 1991 and is now a housing estate.
This envelope was for registered post of 1/3d. There are two vertical graphite lines on the back of
stamps that were an experiment for the automation of mail sorting between 1957 and 1960.
