NOTICES FOR THE YEARS 1690-1699
* 9 0 0 1 NEWS [January 6-9, 1690] {Julian Calendar. January 6-9, 1689}
Whereas divers Abuses have been committed by Persons who have hitherto taken in Letters to be carried to the
General Post-house, within the Limits of East-Smithfield, Wapping, Ratcliffe-Cross, and Limus, &c. whereby many Letters
have miscarried: For the preventing whereof, for the future, there are appointed Three fit Persons at the places aforesaid,
to receive and take in Letters every hour in the Day, on the General Post-days, and untill half an hour after Ten of the
Clock at Night, without any manner of Charge, the Postage only excepted, viz. Mr. John Ward Tallow-Chandler in East-
Smithfield, Mr Samuel Gibs Tobacconist near King Edward's Stairs, and Mr. Daniel Wilkinson at Ratcliff Cross, who will
carefully and safely convey all such Letters to the General Letter-Office in Lombard-street; And all other Persons
whatsoever are to forbear taking in or receiving any Letters by Ring of Bell or otherwise to go by Post, within the Limits of
Tower-hill on the West to Blackwall on the East, and from Whitechapel Street on the North to Wappin on the South, as they
will answer the contrary.

Whereas all Letters directed to the Town of Cranbom, and Parts adjacent, in Hampshire, have heretofore been sent in
the Pool Bag, to be from thence conveyed to Cranbom aforesaid: This is to notify, That all such Letters will for the future
be sent in a particular Bag to be left successively each Post at Cranbom, where Care is already taken to distribute them
accordingly.
* 9 0 0 3 NEWS [June 2-5, 1690]
These are to give Notice, that during His Majesties Journey and Stay in England, a Post shall go every Night in the
Week from the General Letter Office in London, to the place of his Majesties Residence, and likewise bring Returns
accordingly to the said Office.
* 9 0 0 4 NEWS [June 12-16, 1690]
These are to give notice, That for the future there will go a Post thrice every Week, on the usual Post Days, to
Pembrook and Milford-Havel!; as likewise by Carlisle, to Port-Patrick in Scotla1Zd, and so to Ireland; and that nevertheless
Packet-Boats shall go as often as the Wind shall permit from Holyhead to Irela1Zd; so that all persons may have their Letters
sent to Ireland by Holyhead, or by Port-Patrick, as they shall direct them in their superscriptions.
* 9 0 0 5 NEWS [June 19-23, 1690]
Notice is hereby given that all Letters that shall from time to time, after the 24th day of this Instant June be directed to
go by Post to Highworth, Swindon, Wootonbasset, Malmsbury, Cricklade, and parts Adjacent in Wiltshire, shall by the
ordinary Post be sent from the General Letter Office in a particular Bag to Highworth three times every Week, where one
Mr. John Freeman, of that place, is appointed to receive and disperse all such Letters to the several Towns aforesaid, a
Person being also Appointed at each of those Towns to distribute Letters, and duly to Collect and return Answers
accordingly.
