~ Sth May 1864, Entire folded letter sent from Randers to K0benhavn. Dated internally
Sth May, date stamped Ant Ill FREDERIKSHA VN with arrival eds for KJ0BENHA VN.
Until the first armistice on I 2th May there was no official postal service between Jutland and
the rest of the Danish Kingdom. This letter was carried from Randers, through the enemy
lines to Frederikshavn, and on 8th May the stamp was cancelled 19 and dated there before
shipment to K0benhavn, arriving on the 9th.
Memoirs written by postmen in the nineteenth century refer to mail being smuggled in supply wagons, and
being collected and delivered by postmen in civilian clothes.
In what is essentially a commercial intelligence report, the writer states, there have been no papers since the 27th of
last month; post can be sent with the steamship, and when the signal is seen outside the Crenaa district it will be picked up
by boats from the land.. 50,000 rigsdaler in goods has been stolen by the occupiers... I just want this letter to get to you
quickly... For similar reasons as last time I do not sign this letter.
